Dmitry Nikolaevich Zaitsev studied at the Chita State Medical Academy in the medical and preventive faculty from 1995 to 2001. From 2001 to 2002, he completed clinical internship at the Department of Faculty Therapy of the ChSMA, specializing in "Internal Medicine". From 2002 to 2005, he worked as a cardiologist in the intensive care unit of the cardiology department of City Clinical Hospital No. 1. In 2004, he defended his PhD thesis on "Pathogenetic significance of changes in the fatty acid composition of blood lipids and heart rate variability indices in patients with acute alcoholic myocardial infarction".

In 2005, he was accepted as an assistant at the Department of Faculty Therapy. From 2006 to 2009, he studied for a doctorate at the Department of Faculty Therapy. In 2013, he was transferred to the position of associate professor of the Department of Faculty Therapy at the State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education, ChSMA. In December 2013, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic of "Pathogenesis of Cardiovascular Disorders in Chronic Prostatitis". For over 20 years, he has been a practicing physician in the specialties of therapy, cardiology, and functional diagnostics; for a long time, he worked as a cardiologist in the resuscitation and intensive care unit of City Clinical Hospital No. 1 (Chita), in the cardiology department of City Clinical Hospital No. 1 (Chita), and in the diagnostic polyclinic of the ChSMA Clinic. Currently, he is a cardiologist consultant at the faculty clinics of Irkutsk State Medical University and the Professorial Clinic of Irkutsk State Medical University. In 2017, he was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor in the specialty "Internal Medicine". In 2024, he was awarded the academic title of Professor in the specialty "Internal Medicine". Doctor of the highest qualification category in the specialty "Cardiology". More than 250 scientific papers have been published in various publications, he is the author of 2 monographs, co-author of 14 educational and teaching aids, 3 patents for invention, 7 certificates for computer programs.

Currently, under the supervision of D.N. Zaitsev, 3 candidate dissertations have been defended, 1 doctoral and 2 candidate dissertations are in progress. The area of scientific interests is cardiology, lipidology. The area of scientific interests of students is registry studies: Registry of persons who died from the mechanism of sudden cardiac death; Registry of persons infected with COVID-19; Registry of patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and patients with very high cardiovascular risk with insufficient effectiveness of lipid-lowering therapy.

In September 2022, the Center for Atherosclerosis and Lipid Metabolism Disorders (Lipid Center) was created at the Clinic of the Chita State Medical Academy under the supervision of D.N. Zaitsev.
