Scientific biography of Vadim Anatolyevich Byvaltsev

I, Vadim Anatolyevich Byvaltsev, graduated with honors from the Irkutsk State Medical University in 1998, specializing in Pediatrics. By now, I have confirmed certificates in the specialties of Neurosurgery, Traumatology and Orthopedics, and Neurology, and have had the highest qualification category for 12 years. I have been working as a neurosurgeon at the Neurosurgery Center of the National Healthcare Institution "Road Clinical Hospital at the Irkutsk-Passazhirsky Station" of JSC "Russian Railways Medicine" since 2005, since 2007 I have headed the neurosurgical department, since 2014 I have been the head of the Neurosurgery Center and was awarded the position of chief neurosurgeon of the Healthcare Directorate of JSC "Russian Railways". I have experience in performing over 10,000 different neurosurgical interventions on the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and spinal column. Since 2010 – Chairman of the Irkutsk branch of the interregional public organization "Association of Vertebrologists", and am also a member of 10 professional communities (Society of Spinal Neurosurgeons of Europe, Congresses of American, Asian Neurosurgeons, etc.). In 2001, I successfully defended my candidate's dissertation in the specialty "Neurosurgery" on the topic: "Endoscopic diagnostics and surgical treatment of hydrocephalus in children". In 2010, he defended his doctoral dissertation in the specialty "Neurology" on the topic: "Preventive revascularization for the prevention of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes". By order of the President of JSC Russian Railways, he was included in the personnel reserve of managers, in connection with which, from 2012 to 2014, he studied at the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov under the master's program "Policy in Healthcare Management". In 2019, by the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation, I was awarded the academic title of professor in the specialty "Neurosurgery". From 2007 to 2020, he went through the stages of academic scientific work from the position of leading researcher in the department of neurosurgery to deputy director for innovation and international activities of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Irkutsk Scientific Center for Surgery and Traumatology". In the period from 1998 to 2024, 15 monographs, 25 patents, 18 methodological recommendations, 9 textbooks, 4 databases, 4 computer programs and more than 600 scientific papers were published, of which more than 300 published articles are indexed in the Scopus, Pubmed and WoS databases, in particular, more than 100 in periodicals located in the Q1-Q2 cartels with IF above 2.0. I am a member of the editorial boards of the following journals: Clinical Neurology, Neurology and Neurosurgery of Kazakhstan, Neurosurgical Science, Surgical Neurology International, Coluna Columna, Acta biomedica scientifica, Baikal Medical Journal. As a reviewer, I made an expert assessment of more than 200 articles in top-rated domestic and foreign publications.

Under my leadership, new methods of non-invasive instrumental diagnostics of degenerative diseases of intervertebral discs, space-occupying lesions of the central nervous system, as well as various minimally invasive surgical interventions on the spine, brain and spinal cord were developed and introduced into wide clinical practice. Also, under my leadership, 18 grants were won for fundamental and applied scientific research and education in foreign clinics and laboratories (Japan (Fukui, Kyoto, Fujita), China (Beijing), USA (Phoenix), Austria (Vienna), Germany (Berlin), etc.). Among the grants won, it is especially worth mentioning a grant from the Russian Science Foundation, grants and scholarships of the President of the Russian Federation and the "Umnik" grant from the Foundation for Assistance to Innovations and a R&D grant under a state contract for the needs of the Irkutsk Region. From 2008 to 2024, 14 candidate dissertations were defended and approved under my leadership. 16.05.2018, he was included in the members of the dissertation council D 208.064.02. based on the Novosibirsk Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after Ya.L. Tsivyan for the defense of dissertations in the specialties of "neurosurgery", "traumatology and orthopedics". In 2017, he was elected as an expert of the Russian Science Foundation, and since 2018 I have been an expert of the Skolkovo Foundation. I have the following awards: Four times awarded the diploma "Scientific Achievement of the Year - 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023", order of the rector of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education Irkutsk Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education - a branch of the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Professor V.V. Shprakh.; Three times laureate of the regional competition in the field of science and technology of the Irkutsk region (2013, 2018, 2021). Laureate of the "Recognition" award - the award of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan, Almaty, Kazakhstan (2022); "Certificate of Honor of the Mayor of Irkutsk" (2019), "Gratitude of the Governor of the Irkutsk Region" (2013), as well as a diploma "For high achievements in work and initiative shown in the performance of official assignments" (order No. 42 / p dated 02.26.2018 by the General Director of JSC "Russian Railways" O.V. Belozerov). In 2018, he was elected as an honorary professor of the National Neurosurgical Center of Kazakhstan (Astana). I also have experience in organizing 14 scientific and practical conferences: Fukui (Japan), Tokyo (Japan), Kyoto (Japan), USA (Phoenix), Irkutsk (Russia), Moscow (Russia). Since March 2012, I have been combining scientific and practical activities with teaching as a professor in the Department of Orthopedics, Traumatology and Neurosurgery of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “Irkutsk State Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education”, a branch of the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, and since September 2013, I have been heading the Department of Neurosurgery and Innovative Medicine of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “Irkutsk State Medical University”. In addition, I am an officially employed professor-consultant in several foreign universities and companies (National Neurosurgical Center of Kazakhstan, Fukui Medical University - Japan, Barrow Neurological Institute - USA, Zimmer Biomet Academy - Switzerland, etc.).

My use of advanced neurosurgical technologies, specialized instruments, and high-tech equipment allows me to provide highly qualified and high-quality specialized neurosurgical care to residents of the region and other regions of Russia (Republic of Buryatia, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Yakutia, etc.). The use of unique treatment and diagnostic methods allows us to maintain leading positions in the region and on the territory of the Russian Federation. Under my supervision, more than 50 specialists have been trained who work in various regions of Russia (Irkutsk Region, Republic of Buryatia, Republic of Sakha Yakutia, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Primorsky Krai and the Far Eastern Federal District, Omsk Region, Vladimir Region, Moscow Region, etc.).
